SalvageGuide helps businesses and used car buyers uncover a part of a vehicle’s history that standard insurance write-off checks may miss. Its register contains millions of records of vehicles listed for sale at salvage auctions, stretching back more than 20 years. Through One Auto API, businesses can use a salvage check API to search that history by registration number and bring the result into buying, appraisal and vehicle history workflows.

A salvage auction record can reveal that a vehicle was previously offered for sale with accident damage or a mechanical issue. Depending on the source,  the check can return details such as the auction date, lot description, recorded mileage and damage descriptions.  That information gives a dealer a reason to investigate further before buying or retailing the vehicle.

Find salvage history beyond insurance markers

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau’s Vehicle Salvage & Theft Data (VS&TD) service provides access to data from the former Motor Insurance Anti-Fraud and Theft Register, known as MIAFTR. Insurance write-off markers are an important part of a vehicle history check, but they do not tell the whole story of every vehicle sold through a salvage auction.

Some auction vehicles have accident or mechanical issues without an associated insurance marker.  A recently sold, categorised vehicle may also reach the market before the relevant marker appears in an insurance industry check. Protect margin and customer confidence

Unrecorded salvage can create serious commercial risks for a dealer or insurer.  Repairs may not have been completed to an appropriate standard, with possible consequences for safety, reliability and the vehicle’s useful life. For a dealer, previous damage that is missed during acquisition can lead to additional refurbishment work or higher warranty costs after sale.  For an insurer, vehicles purchased from a salvage auction may be insured on normal terms prior to a marker being added to the official insurance database,  if this happens at all.

Where a vehicle is financed, concerns about its quality can lead to complaints involving the lender, potentially resulting in a return, commission clawback and further costs. Together, these issues can quickly erode the margin expected from what initially appeared to be a profitable purchase.

Checking salvage auction history before committing to purchase or taking risk on a vehicle provides an opporutnity to identify risk.  Buyes can inspect a vehicle more closely, obtain evidence of repairs, adjust the offer or decide against a purchase. Add protection to vehicle history reports

Salvage auction data also matters to consumers. Someone buying privately may has fewer practical protections than a customer purchasing from a dealer with a finance agreement, making it especially important to understand a vehicle’s background before money changes hands.

That is why salvage checks are a valuable component of vehicle history reports. Many report providers use SalvageGuide data to add auction history to the other checks a buyer may expect. A record of an earlier listing can reveal information about damage or mechanical condition that deserves investigation, even where a conventional insurance write-off result shows no marker.
